Jim’s Secret Texas BBQ Fable

A SIMPLE DISH CRAFTED BY FABLE CO-FOUNDER, JIM FULLER, THAT REALLY SHOWS OFF FABLE’S MEATY FLAVOUR & TEXTURE

Fable’s wizard of all things mushrooms and all-around fun-guy knows a thing or two about cooking Fable to perfection, and here’s his favourite, yet super simple way to serve it up.
Being a Texan ’n all he is no stranger to what makes a good juicy and succulent BBQ brisket.

So dig in and enjoy this perfectly sweet and sticky covered Fable. Finger-licking allowed! 😉

Ingredients

Tools

  • Wok or flat grill
  • Wok spade if using wok
  • Grill spatula if using grill

Method

  1. On high heat, get wok/grill hot – nearly smoking and do not lower heat throughout cooking.

  2. Introduce cooking oil, quickly followed by Fable chunks. Keep it moving while all sides of Fable cook for 2-3 minutes. Both hands should be used for cooking. 

  3. Break up Fable chunks randomly while cooking. Do not lower heat. Introduce HP Sauce or A1 Sauce and keep it moving. Expect steam and spatter. Develop caramelised external surfaces for 1-2 minutes, get close to burnt caramel, until most of the sheen is gone and the product looks matte.

  4. Introduce Bulls-Eye BBQ Sauce or Stubb’s Original Barbecue Sauce and keep it moving. Expect more steam and more spatter. Cook for a further 1-2 minutes. Jazz it with a bit of cracked pepper.  

  5. Turn off heat and serve while hot. Enjoy!

    I also just watched Down to Earth and loved your segment. I live in Canada and was about to order your product. I unfortunately cancelled the order as the shipping cost would have been a little over 100$. Hopefully one day, the cost will come down and this will be affordable.

      Hi Fable, Like everyone else we saw you on Down To Earth on Netflix. We headed up to Harris Farm in Sydney today and got one of your meaty slow braised mushroom packs. My sister is just cooking it up and she added some Maggie Beer Cabernet BBQ sauce to it. Just had a little taste test and can’t wait for dinner. We are not vegans but always looking at non meat alternatives to reduce our meat intake. Thank you so much for not having a product full of fillers, additives and colouring, which is what a lot of vegan food in supermarkets contain. Cheers.

    Hi Fable People! I have now placed my 2nd order of your fabulous mushroom meat and am excited to try some of your recipes and incorporate it in to more of my own as well. I have to say, I absolutely love this stuff! Growing up in Kansas, USA, beef is considered king and though I will may never be able to go totally vegan, I love having this as a way to substitute and also cut down on the amount of beef that I eat. Both for humane reasons and environmental reasons. I am very much looking forward to being able to get more of your products through GTFO and hopefully someday through a store here locally.

    I made this today and, like others, I thought it was the best vegan bbq I’ve ever had. It tasted like meat. Particularly the texture is so similar that it’s virtually impossible to tell either in taste or visually. The sauce also perfectly complimented the fable meat and gave it that genuine Texas BBQ flavour. Will buy regularly. I can’t see how anyone could genuinely rate this less than 5 stars. It’s that good!
